What is a Tractor?

Do you know how this word came into realization? The word Tractor was derived from 2 words i.e. Traction and Motors. The word Trac was derived from Traction and the remaining word tor was derived from motor.

In the earlier part of eighteenth century, such machines were used for Traction purpose and were aptly called Traction Motors.

In the beginning of nineteenth century, the real form of Tractors was introduced when a 3 Wheel Tractor was launched to be used commercially. The Tractor is an agriculture machine which can either push or pull agricultural implements in farm fields.

The increase in population and rise in hunger ratio among people in different parts of this world has lead to the need for efficient Farming machines. The bulk crop cannot be produced unless we have efficient machines and Tractor is one such invention which accelerates the farm production.

Types of Tractors as per their application

These Farm Machines are of great importance and let us find out different types of Tractors according to their classifications.

The Tractor Types can be classified into 3 major divisions namely:

  • Type of Construction
  • Type of Drive
  • The Purpose for which the usage is done

The First type is Construction type and it is further divided into 2 types.

i) First type is the Tractor in which the driver can easily sit and drive the machine.

ii) The Second type is the Tractor in which the operator walks along side and it is also called as Walking Type Tractor.

The Second type depends upon the type of drives i.e.

  • Track Type
  • Wheel Type

Tracked Type has Half Track and Full track types of tractors.

Wheel type is sub divided into i) 2 Wheeler or Two Wheeled ii) Three Wheeler or 3 Wheeled and iii) Four Wheeler types of tractors.

Track Type Tractors

In these types of Tractors, instead of wheels one track is fitted on either side. This track gets drive from the sprocket run by real axle shaft. To steer the Tractor, there is no steering gear fitted. Here, the machine is steered by applying brakes to one side of the track while the other track is in motion.

Half Track Type

In these types of Tractors, a small track chain is fitted at the rear end only while tyres are fitted at the front axle. Track Type Tractors are generally used for reclaiming barren lands and are not much used for Agricultural tasks.

These machines are fitted with tracks in such a way that the contact area with ground is larger and facilitates in increased traction power. These machines are very useful in dams and in areas where earth moving tasks are required.

Wheel Type Tractors

Their primary usage is in Agricultural tasks. They have fast running speed and the fitted tyres are able to absorb certain amount of field shock too.

The domain of use for these machines can be classified into small farms, hilly regions and for general gardening purpose.

Three Wheel or Tricycle Type

Three Wheeled Tractors were very popular 20 years back but now they have been replaced by Four Wheelers. They had single or dual wheel fitted at front end and were considered apt for moving around shorter turns.

The Types of Tractors in third classification depend upon the purpose for which they are used. They are further divided into broad categories listed below:

  1. Utility Tractors
  2. Row Crop Tractor
  3. Orchard Type
  4. Industrial Tractor
  5. Garden Tractor
  6. Rotary Tillers
  7. Implement Carrier
  8. Earth Moving Tractors

Utility Tractor is general purpose machine and is designed for ploughing and driving any other equipment through its drive and is considered good for such farms where farmer cannot afford more machines to perform specific jobs.

Row Crop Tractor

This is an all round machine and is designed in such a way that it meets all the Agricultural demands like Ploughing, Harrowing, Levelling, Pulling Seed Drills, Weed Control, running different machines like Water Pumps, Threshers using belt pulley.

They have the below listed attributes:

  • They have greater ground clearance.
  • They have good row spacing provision.
  • They are easy to steer and can nicely take shorter turns.
  • These machines are user friendly and are easy to drive.
  • The attachment and detachment of Agricultural Implements is a quick and easy process with these machines.
  • There is a provision for power take off drive too.
  • A power lift is provided for heavy lifting or for lowering agricultural implements.

Orchard Type

These special type Farm machines are only used in Orchards. These Tractors have big height so that while sitting on the Tractor the Driver can easily pluck the fruits or the trees can easily be trimmed. There is no part of this machine outside the surface and this allows easy passage in between the trees.

Industrial Type

The Industrial Type machines are also called as Tuggers. They are useful in pulling loads and are fitted with crane boom for easy lifting of loads.

Garden Type

These machines fall in the power range of 1 to 10 HP (Horse Power) and have very small construction size. They are mostly used for Grass Cutting or for making Flower Beds in the garden. The wheels fitted to such machines are having the size of a Scooter and have a thicker depth.

Rotary Tillers

They fall under the category of Walking Type Tractors and are used in small fields or on hills where fields are smaller in size and are at different height levels. Here, Ordinary equipment cannot work efficiently. Blades are fitted to the tillers for the purpose of preparing seed beds efficiently by pulverizing the content of soil.

Implement Carrier

In these types of Tractors, there is an extended chassis frame between the front and rear tyres where all the implements like Seed Drills, Fertilizer, Drill, Duster, Sprayer, Rotary Sweeper, Loader, and platforms can be easily mounted.

Earth Moving Tractors

These Farm Machines are heavy in weight and quite strong. They are available in both track and tyre type varieties. Their primary usage is for doing earth moving work on dams, quarries and different types of constructional works.

At that time, during my school days, I used to reach school late due to badly inflated tire tubes. The tips explained below will come in handy whether you are using cars, trucks, tractors or any automobile.

The Average Life of Tires depends upon the amount of care we take. The life span of tire increases with regular care. The tyres have different sizes like Tractor Tires have big size and car tyres are relatively smaller. The life expectancy of a tire in buses can be 50-60 thousand kms and 20-30 thousand kms in case of cars.  Tips to improve Average Tire Life

To increase or extend the life expectancy of tires, let us follow some basic instructions which will improve the tyre life and age considerably.

  1. Overloading

The vehicle should only be loaded to the limits set by its manufacturer. If the vehicle is overloaded, the unnecessary wear and tear happens. This reduced the tyre life cycle and makes it useless within a short period of time.

  1. Loading at Right Positions

In case of heavy vehicles, like Trucks, Trailers etc, the load should be placed in the centre of the vehicle. The extra load should not be placed at either rear or front side as this will cause the excessive heating of tire and ultimately causes tire failure. The tire life reduces mostly due to wrong placement of extra load.

  1. Over Inflating Tyre

There is a misconception in the minds of people that extra pressure in the tyres allows to put extra weight on the vehicle. The reality is that extra inflate tyres do not get extra capacity to bear further load and neither they become stronger.

 

Eventually, the extra inflation and load makes the tyre useless.

Another disadvantage of having extra pressure is that tyres are not able to absorb road shocks and as a result the shocks are transmitted to the Chassis.

The major different between over inflated tyre and properly inflated tire is that the Tread Contact Area of over inflated tyre is lesser. The over inflation greatly reduce the tire life.

  1. Under Inflation Issues

To improve tire life, Under Inflation also has to be given proper attention. Most of the drivers do not get the tyres inflated regularly and keep using the vehicle or Agricultural Machine regularly. This results in premature failure.

 

Prevention of Under Inflation Failures

Regularity is the key i.e. tires should be regularly checked for proper pressure levels.

The valve caps should be screwed tightly as this helps in maintaining the tire life.

The slow leakage should be properly checked as this type of leakage hampers the tire life most of the times.

The tire life is an important parameter and it should not be ignored.

 

  1. Air Bleeding inside Tyres

This is a common observation and severely affects the average tire life. After a long journey, some drivers check the pressure of tyres and set it right by reducing the pressure levels. This is a wrong routine work. The pressure of tyre should never be checked while it is hot.

 

If air is bleeding from a hot tire, it will increase the temperature further. The best way is to allow the tyre to cool down and then check the pressure levels.

 

  1. Driving Habits
  • The way of driving has a direct impact on the tire life. Follow these ways to improve the life of your tyre.
  • Try to avoid taking sharp turns.
  • Avoid careless driving i.e. driving above the rough stones.
  • Avoid fast driving on rough road which can largely reduce the life span on tyres.
  • Avoid fast driving on all types of roads.
  • Do not start the vehicle with an immediate speed so that tyres can be rotated instantaneously.
  • Avoid using Brakes again and again while driving.
  • The unwanted things should be regularly removed from the tyre treads.
  • Harsh Application of Brakes on the tyres should not be done. The harsh and sudden applying of brakes should not be done. These steps will improve the shelf tire life.
  1. Tires should be properly matched

In big vehicles like Buses, Trucks etc, the dual wheels are fitted on the rear axle. In such vehicles, the height of both the tyres should be same for the longevity of tire life. The immediate effect is running of the vehicle dominantly to the one side of the road.

This difference in heights of both tyres causes one tyre to carry most part of the load. This further causes hot running of bigger tyre and it automatically reduced tire life.

  1. Check Mechanical Faults

The vehicle should be checked for all types of mechanical faults. The Steering System is responsible for moving operations. If any defect is in steering system, then it accelerates wear and tear of tyre which decreases the tire life to a big extent.

Storage Tips to increase Tire Life

The tires of any vehicle i.e. tractor, car, or any automobile are sometimes not used much and should be properly stored. The best way is to jack the tires and reduce the air pressure.

If the vehicle is not going to be used for longer period of time, then the tires should be removed and stored inside a room, dark place which keeps the tires away from water and dust.

There are different types of tractor tires available in the market and it becomes all the more important to know about different ways to take care of these big sized tires while working in the fields.

One of those learning event is being shared by me today. This is very important process and changing, removing process should be carried out with proper care by any individual.

There are different ways to remove or replace a tire form a wheel or a rim. Whether you need to change tires of car, trucks, tractor etc, these tips will prove to be useful. Let us learn the apt technique to change tires and then precautions that needs to be taken while removing tyres.

How and When to Change Tires

This is very important and everyone should know the right time to execute this process. The changing of tires can be done easily at home or any place. This is not a rocket science and changing tires is a very easy work routine. Let us learn different steps required to change tires:

  • Firstly, you should loosen the nuts of the tyre so that it can be removed easily.
  • The Wedges should be placed before and after the rest of 3 wheels so that vehicle stays in a stationary position and is not able to move while changing tires.
  • The jack should be fixed up and vehicle needs to be lifted to such a height that its wheels are free from the ground.
  • The loosened nuts should be removed and then wheels can be removed afterwards.
  • The wheels should be kept flat on the ground and then it should be deflated. The deflation of wheels should happen after the removal of valve through a valve die.
  • The tyre should be hammered so that is free from beads.
  • Then, the tyre lever should be pressed between bead of tyre and rim flange.
  • Now, another tyre lever should be pressed in the same manner but little away from the first lever.
  • Press both levers downwards. As a result, some portion of tyre bead finally comes out of the rim.
  • The first lever should be pulled out and inserted again little distance away from the second lever.
  • Repeat these steps of changing lever positions until the tire comes out of the rim.
  • If tyre needs to be replaced, then repeat the above steps for removing beads one by one. If tube needs to be replaced, just fix the new tube inside.

Preventions needed to Change Tires

The basic steps to change tire has been explained above. There are few precautions that have to be followed while changing tires.

  • The levers should not be sharp. The reason to avoid sharpness of reasons is that tube might get cut during the process.
  • While changing tires, put little French chalk inside the tyre. It works as a lubricant.
  • Sometimes, tyre bead may get stuck on rim due to rusty rim. Do not apply extra force. In this case, you should put little water on tyre bead and leave it for 20 minutes and then again try.
  • Always put few lbs of air inside the tube before fixing bead of tyre. This air prevents the cutting of tube and keeps it away from lever and rim.
  • While inflating tyres, you should ensure that the tire is resting nicely on the rim flange. This setting is very important for heavy duty vehicles especially Tractor Tires.
  • After the steps to change tires have been completed, you should tighten the nuts and only then remove the jack.
  • After removing the Jack, the nuts should be tightened again for safety.
  • The Wheel Nuts should be checked mire often in new vehicles i.e. after every few hundred kms. The reason for regular checking in case of new vehicles is that wheel nuts might become loose due to the paint.

Learn more about Secondary Tillage implements.Tractor Agriculture is going to explain Secondary Tillage Implements today.  Growing up in my ancestral village, I used to see different Types of Tractors and relevant tools being used in the fields by the laborers.

In my childhood, I was keen in seeing different tools being attached to the Tractor and then made to work effectively. I was young at that time and could not grasp the technicalities involved.

I asked my father once regarding the usage of these implements but my father ignored my question thinking of it as a childish inquiry. I used to feel bad when my questions were ignored by my father and field laborers, but that curiosity is still within me.

My years of observation and accompanying my father into the fields have given me enough confidence to showcase the rich knowledge through this blog.

Tractor Agriculture discussed a Primary Tillage Implement in the previous Article and today going to discuss secondary tillage implements in detail. The definition of these tools will be clearly explained today. You can download the pdf available at the end of this article.

These are the tools that are used for the purpose of soil preparation, soil smoothening, soil packing and removing unwanted weeds.

The basic work done by secondary tillage implements is given below:

  • These tillage tools remove the weeds by cutting. They are covered, dragged out from the surface of soil and are finally killed.
  • Tillage tools loosen the soil and facilitate the moisture entry into the soil.
  • Tillage tools perform the smoothening and levelling process of the field.
  • They break the clods and later pulverize them for efficient seed bed preparation.
  • These tools cut the crop residue like straw etc and further mix them with soil for faster decomposition.

Types of Secondary Tillage Implements

Sometimes, Primary Tillage Implements are used in place of secondary tillage implements like one way plough etc. They play an important role in Agriculture.

The major secondary tillage implements are listed below:

  1. Harrows

They are further divided into 2 types.

i)             Disc Harrow

ii)           Toothed Harrow

Disc Harrow is sub divided into a) Trailing Type b) Mounted Type

  1. Keep the secondary implements clean with regular checks.
  2. All nut bolts should be fully tight.
  3. The regular grease should be applied to the bearing after every set hours of operation.

Storage Tips:

After the season ends, keep following things in mind:

  1. The implement should be cleaned.
  2. The disc should be coated with grease.
  3. He frame should be painted.
  4. The implement should be stored under a shelter.

Pulverizers and Rollers

These secondary tillage implements have been used from the earlier times for the purpose of crushing the clods and smoothening the fields. If clods are not crushed, it pulls the clods inside the soil surface. Different types of Pulverizers or Rollers are available like corrugates type or spiked teeth type.

 

Cultivators

The cultivators are also called as Tillers or Tooth Harrows. The tillers are primarily used to further loosen the already ploughed land before seed is planted into the soil. Tillers are preferred choice for hard grounds.

Another very important use of tiller is that it destroys the grass and weeds by removing their roots. These weeds come out in direct sunlight and sun’s rays destroy them.

Types of Tillers

There are 2 types of basic tillers namely:

  1. Rigid Tine Tillers
  2. Springed Tine Tillers

Rigid Tine Tiller

It has a tine made out of spring steel and is fastened to a frame. It generally has 2 rows of tines fastened to the frame. The number of tines is an odd number and the most famous tillers have between 7-13 tines.

The 7, 9, 11 tine tillers are generally used in smaller Tractors having power up to 35 HP, while 13 tine tiller is used with Farm Tractors having horse power up to 50 HP.

Spring Tine Tiller

When working on the field, tillers are subjected to severe stress. Sometimes, stones on the field can break the tines. To avoid the breakage of tines, spring type tillers are used instead of rigid type tillers. These tillers are very popular nowadays.

 

Maintenance Tips for Tillers

Tillers are one of the very basic secondary tillage implements used by the farmers and need apt care and preservation. To manage this implement better, you need to keep few things in mind:

  1. The teeth of tines should be kept at equal depth. To check this posture, place the tiller on plane ground and all the teeth should touch the ground. If the teeth are touching the ground, it means they are at equal depth.
  2. The teeth should have sharp edges so that good penetration can be maintained inside the soil. After the grinding process, the depth should again be checked.

Manure Spreader - Tractor Agriculture The weekend just went by and Tractor Agriculture is back this week to shower light on another topic called what is Manure Spreader.

Have you ever wondered how the fertility of soil is maintained time and again by the farmers?

Human body suffers from lots of deficiencies and to overcome these shortcomings we take medicines. On the same lines, Fertilizer is applied to the soil when it gets deficient of vital nutrients.

These nutrients can be plant, food elements or any other type of deficiency. They are very important step in the process of Agriculture.

These fertilizers also known as Agricultural Equipments provide the fertility to the soil. It has been observed that manure spreader of correct type should be used to get higher yield in an agricultural farm. They are also used in liquid forms.

The Farm Tractors come in handy while performing these tasks.

There are different types of fertilizers used nowadays and each type has its specific usage:

  1. Composed Manure
  2. Granulated Fertilizer
  3. Liquid Fertilizer
  4. Gaseous Fertilizer

Different types of Manure Spreader

Manure Spreader is fertilizer equipment which is used for transferring barnyard manure, composed manure from the store to the fields. It is then uniformly spread in partial pulverized form on to the soil. There are mainly 2 types of manure spreader categories in tractor supply domain.

  • Tractor Based
  • Ground Based

There are lots of manufacturers and the diy manure spreader is very much in demand. The suppliers list spans across India and major countries of the world. Let us understand their working step by step.

The power that is used in Tractor Driven Manure Spreader is taken from P.T.O shaft of a tractor which usually runs at 540 rpm. It drives a shaft fitted on the side of container and ultimately it drives gearbox fitted at the rear side.

Generally, 4 rives are taken from the gearbox.

  • First drive is used for upper beater.
  • Second drive is used for lower beater.
  • The third drive is used for feed conveyor.
  • The last drive is used to drive the spreader itself.

The apron or feed conveyor chain conveys the manure from the front part of the container to the rear side for the purpose of regular spreading on the farm. It runs at speed of 1 to 4 rpm. The gear shifting arrangement facilitates the speed adjustment. Stop pawl is used for control feed rate.

Feed is used to raise the rocket arm and it makes the feed pawl well engaged with teeth on ratchet wheel. As and when the ratchet wheel turns, the feed conveyor shaft turns accordingly.

Manure Spreader Parts

Most manure spreader varieties generally consist of below listed parts:

  • Upper Beater
  • Lower Beater
  • Spreader

Now, let us understand these parts briefly.

The upper beater is placed at the top slightly in front of the lower beater. The main function of upper beater is to beat or tear apart the large flakes so that they are easily pulverized.

The lower beater is placed at the lower portion and its working is similar to the upper beater. This beater runs in the opposite direction to the main wheel.

Nowadays, most of the manure spreaders are equipped with spreaders to spread the manure which is broken by the beaters in wide variety of ranges. It has spiral auger like blades where half of the blade is angled to turn the manure to the right side and other side is shaped to turn the manure to the left side.

Ground Based Spreaders

These types of spreaders get the drive from the wheel of spreader. Their working is same as tractor driver spreader. Here, separate fertilizer distributors are available in which the fertilizer is forced out with the help of a propeller having a number of blades.

The quantity of fertilizer that needs to be applied is adjusted by shifting the slide feed plate. This can be operated with the help of a lever.

Granulated Fertilizer Equipment

These Agricultural equipments are very popular nowadays and are available in different types of models to suit any soil type. These are also known as chemical fertilizer.

While using these fertilizers, the seeds and fertilizer are never allowed to keep contact with each other. If seed comes in contact with the fertilizer, it will delay the germination of seeds. Keeping this issue in mind, these equipments are designed scientifically.

To apply granulated fertilizer, different types of methods are used:

  • Seed cum fertilizer drill is used.
  • Hill dropping attachment is used.
  • The Broadcast Spray is used.
